Best Way to Buy Smoked Salmon
COASTAL LIVING MAGAZINE selects us as one of the best mail-order sources for gifts of fresh seafood.
"Sent from the Sea" *
"Last holiday season, we ordered seafood from mail-order sources coast to coast. All make delicious, welcome, nearly ready-to-serve gifts for your friends or for yourself. On these pages, youll find a list of our favorites, plus simple serving suggestions to make them even more special. Bon appetit!
Our test kitchen went undercover to determine the best mail-order sources for gifts of fresh seafood. During last years holiday rush, staffers ordered anonymously from many companies and rated the seafood on its appearance, flavor, and freshness. They also evaluated each companys customer service, delivery time, and shipping containers, including gift packaging where available.
Order gifts for special friends or as a holiday treat for yourself."

John Hansell of the Malt Advocate writes in the April 1998 issue's NEW PRODUCTS (Other Pleasures) feature: "These delicious prime pieces of smoked Scottish salmon and trout from the Scottish Smoked Salmon Co. are air-shipped to the U.S. for nationwide delivery. You can even buy one variety that is aged in Tobermory Scotch Whisky. Just the thing for your next malt tasting!"
The Scottish Smoked Salmon Company is on the "MUST TRY LIST" of the book "Fabulous Foods by Mail" The Essential Sourcebook by Rebecca Gray, Willow Creek Press, P.O.Box 147, Minocqua, WI 54548
She writes " ... food is actually arriving faster than what we purchase at the grocery store. And if freshness is superior then so must be that characteristic quality .... " She includes Scottish Smoked Salmon Co. on her "Must Try List" which she consideres the "best of the best". On page 181 she comments on our single malt whisky cured Tobermory Smoked Salmon: "This is lovely, delicate smoked salmon. I really liked the Tobermory salmon marinated in the Tobermory Single-Malt Scotch. This was quite unusual and very special . On the "must try" list. "
In the October 1997 issue of Washingtonian executive food and wine editor Tom Head says he "... likes smoked salmon cured in Tobermory Single Malt Whisky from the Isle of Mull".
Previously Scottish Smoked Salmon Company's salmon was featured in Gourmet 's "Food Gifts by Mail", December 1994. Bon Appetit included both salmon and trout in their "Bon Vivant" section, January 1995, as well as two booklets "Fast and Easy Quick Recipes for Busy Cooks", and "Tastes of the World", March 1997.
Leslie Beal Bloom in Simply Seafood's Fall issue, 1996, "Flying Fish: Seafood by Mail" writes:
"Break out the bagpipes and savor superb Scottish smoked salmon. A favorite for years at the Russian Tea Room in New York City, this salmon is farmed in the clear, cold waters of Tobermory Bay , on the Island of Mull off the Scottish coast. The salmon's rich peachy-orange flesh is lightly smoked with a firm, tender texture .... They also have cold -smoked rainbow trout that are farm raised in Aros Loch to about six pounds. The delicately-flavored flesh of the trout is a rich red-orange, taking its salmonlike color from both the shrimp in its feed and the small crustaceans it eats in the loch. Both the trout and the salmon are sliced into traditional Scottish long slices. Each delivery includes helpful illustrated instructions for serving a side of salmon." Leslie Beal Bloom
